In celebration of Pokémon Day I wanted to talk about my favorite video game franchise of all time. Pokémon has always held a special place in my life and is something that has always been there for me. During any times during my life where I needed something to take my mind off of problems I had Pokémon was always there to comfort me.
I remember getting a Gameboy Color for my birthday when I was 5 or 6. That Gameboy is one of the only presents I can remember getting from my early childhood, because it is one of the most influential presents I’ve ever been given. I got Pokémon Red Version as well and I wasn’t only gifted a video game but entry into another universe where a 10 year old kid could save the world with his Pokémon friends. I was blown away by the depth and creativity of the game and I remember playing it every chance I had. I had already been watching the anime every saturday morning and I liked it a lot, but the game brought it to another level.
The game introduced me to rpgs which are now my favorite video game genre and showed me how much fun it could be to customize your party and how attached you could become pixels and data. I love that you can bring your Pokémon through the generations with you to each new game so you don’t have to leave any of them behind. The emotional attachment trainers have to their Pokémon is something that other franchises cannot replicate and it is what sets it apart for me.
I have played every game in the franchise since the first generation and will play every game that comes out in the future, I can’t wait to see what the future of the franchise holds and share it with my kids one day and see them embark on their own journeys in the Pokémon world. Pokémon is more than just a video game franchise, it is something that has always been there for me and something that I will always hold dear.
