The Playstation 5 has been Revealed!

Sony just unveiled the next generation of gaming yesterday and I honestly could not be more excited for what the future holds! Not only did they show off the brand new, and very unique looking console, which I think looks awesome, but they also showed off a plethora of new games we can look forward too!

I want to use this post to highlight and talk about the things I was most excited about from the presentation!

The Playstation 5

The console itself sports a sleek new design that is sure to turn heads rather than blend in with the rest of the entertainment center. I have seen a lot of split opinions on this design online, and while I admit it looks like something out of the Jetsons, I think it looks cool. It sets them apart from the simple black box that Microsoft is offering, which is exactly what they wanted to do.

They also surprised everyone by showcasing not one, but two different versions of the PS5. One will have the disc drive just like normal, while the digital version will have no option for discs and rely solely on digital downloads and streaming. It seems like a step in the right direction that will reduce the price of this version of the console as well as take the first steps to cutting out the retail middleman in the games industry. Playstation is probably okay with selling this version at more of a loss because they know that the only place you will be able to purchase games will be directly from them.

In addition to all of this, they showed off a few more accessories with the hardware including a headset, remote control, charging stand for the controllers, and a new camera. They all matched the sleek black and white design of the console and I am sure I will pick up at least the headset when I grab the console on launch day.

My Favorite Games of the Showcase

Spider-Man: Miles Morales

The stream started with them showing a teaser for a new and improved version of GTA 5 for the PS5, which was a bit disappointing, but then things quickly picked up and the pace was set when heard the voice over from Spiderman introducing the next person to take the mantle. Miles Morales looks to be a game in-between a traditional sequel and dlc. I would expect it to be more substantial than a dlc pack, and it should probably fall into the $40 price range. The biggest surprise however, is that this is slated for release in Holiday 2020! We are going to be playing this game this year!

Horizon Forbidden West

This was the showstopper that more or less ended things, at least before the reveal of the console. Horizon Zero Dawn was one of the most beloved games of the PS4 generation and now we get our first glimpse of Aloy returning. Judging from the trailer, this seems to expand the world of Horizon in a major way while also expanding on what Aloy is able to do in the world. For example, we see Aloy swimming underwater and exploring the depths. I think this is going to be a flagship series for Playstation for a long time, and it is exciting to see it get the headline treatment here.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

When Ratchet & Clank were brought back in the remake a few years ago it was like reuniting with a childhood friend you hadn’t seen in forever. I thought it was superbly done and it brought back the golden age of the platform, adventure genre. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart appears to be ready to build on what was successful in the original remake and provide us with another astonishingly beautiful game filled with joyous adventure.

Ghostwire: Tokyo

Ghostwire: Tokyo is shaping up to be an interesting game. Set in Tokyo it seems you are able to see and interact with spirits (most of whom seem malevolent). The trailer takes a first person perspective which I didn’t expect for this game, but which seems like it makes sense for what they are doing. It looks like you will be able to combat these enemies with a number of spiritual/magical attacks, most of which were somewhat reminiscent of ninjutsu in Naruto. Either way, the aesthetic heavily appealed to me and the story seems interesting, so this will definitely be one I grab.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits

There is not another game on this list that screams out to me as being exactly my kind of game more than Kena: Bridge of Spirits. I got some serious Zelda vibes from the trailer and it seems like it is going to be exactly that sort of action adventure experience. In the trailer we see Kena interacting with spirits that follow her around, and that she even directs like Pikmin at one point. If Ember Lab is able to provide an experience in line with older Zelda games, this is going to be one of my favorite games of next year!

Project Athia

Project Athia is one of the most intriguing games shown in this entire showcase. Square Enix is crafting an entirely new world that looks to blend modern and fantasy elements. The creatures shown all looked to be super detailed and vicious and the environments were drop dead gorgeous. The powers our main character used looked unique and like they would be a lot of fun to mess around with. The only thing that makes me hesitant to be more excited is that this game is likely multiple years away at this point. No date was shown and the Project Athia name is almost assuredly a placeholder. We honestly might not see this game until 2023 or 2024.

Wrap-up

All-in-all I thought this was one of the best video game showcases I have seen in quite some time. Not only did we see the brand new console we have all been waiting for, but we got to see a staggering number of exclusive games, most of which we will not have to wait too long to get our hands on. The Playstation 5 is shaping up to have an amazing first year of its lifecycle and if this is the type of care we can expect from the content moving forward, I think we are all in for a treat.

As always, thanks so much for reading! Do you plan on getting a PS5 at launch later this year? I know times are hard for a lot of people right now, so it might not be the best time for a new console launch, but I am definitely planning to pick it up day one. Let me know if you plan to get it as well as which of these games has you most excited in the comments below or over on social media. Remember to check back (at least) every Wednesday and Saturday for new posts and sign-up via email to make sure you never miss a thing! Be safe and have a great day!

  1. Did they mention a price schedule for the console and all of the accessories? I was thinking, ‘What a crummy time to release what’s essentially a luxury product.’ Then again, I know people who would kill for a Nintendo Switch right now (because Animal Crossing). Also, I just bought a PS4 after years of slogging along with a PS3. I kinda want to wait—for a long while—before I splurge on the new system (which hopefully won’t be yet another Sony machine that won’t play games built for earlier console models).

(Sob. I miss my old PS2. That was a fun console with some great games.)

    1. They haven’t mentioned price yet, but I would expect 500-600 depending on whether it’s the digital edition or not.

I do believe the PS5 will be backwards compatible, but they haven’t completely confirmed what that will look like yet.
