Why Fall Guys is the Battle Royale we Needed

Fall Guys released recently on Playstation and PC (free with PS+ for the month of August) and it has been the breath of fresh air the battle royale genre desperately needed. Lately every battle royale has been basically the exact same game, drop in with a squad, shoot the other squads, complain about lag, and repeat. There’s only so many times you can shoot another player online with a differently named gun that might as well be the same before you can’t stand it anymore. Fall Guys gets rid of the guns and the same old tropes and basically makes a battle royale out of Mario Party mini games.

Fall Guys consists of episodes (games) that begin with 60 participants with limits to how many qualify out of each round until only one player reigns victorious. The first coupe games in an episode revolve around a race through an obstacle course where you need to beat out around half the field. If you make it through these you usually run into at least one team game where you have to work together with other players toward a common goal. I see a lot of complaints in the community about the team games as you don’t have complete control of your own destiny any more, although as long as you aren’t on yellow team I think they mix things up pretty well.

Once you get down to about 9-12 players you will be met with a final round, winner take all. These rounds are what the game is all about. There is a race to the finish where you are tasked with avoiding obstacles to grab the crown at the end, a game where platforms fall out from under you as you run and jump on them in hopes of being the last player left on the platforms, another one (that everyone hates) involves being the last player with a tail and avoiding the other players who try to grab it from you, and finally they just added in a new final game where you jump over pylons that are rotating as the ground slowly falls out from beneath you.

The game is so great because it is so accessible. Every player moves at the same speed, jumps at the same height, and dives and grabs in the same way. Unlike other games where you can upgrade your attributes, the only thing that gets better here is the player themselves. You will learn little shortcuts and the best routes for timing as you play and it feels amazing to outplay someone who has no technical advantage over you.

I think this game will really have some staying power as the months and years go on and it gets more and more fleshed out with new game modes and seasons. The developers have already begun adding in new levels and that gives me hope that it will stay consistent and there will always be new content to come back to. The only real complaint I have in the game is the trophy that will likely prevent me from ever getting the platinum for this game which is Infallible. The trophy requires you to win 5 times in a row. As of writing this I have 10 wins overall and I don’t think any of those have come in a stretch of more than 2 in a row. I think it really speaks to the game that I am spending so much time with it even without chasing trophies.

All in all I cannot wait to see what this game becomes and how it changes the landscape of the battle royale genre moving forward. I also need to give a shout-out to the amazing Fall Guys Twitter account which I’ve been following to stay up to date on the game news. It is one of the most hilarious and engaging accounts you will find anywhere on Twitter!

As always, thanks so much for reading! If you are playing Fall Guys and want to play together let me know in the comments below and I’ll add you on PS4! I’m always down to play with new people! Be sure to check back (at least) every Wednesday and Saturday for new posts and sign-up via email to make sure you never miss a thing! Be safe and have a great day!

  1. My boyfriend and I have been watching videos of people playing it and it looks so much fun! I’m not much of a gamer, but I’ve been thinking about downloading it. As you mention, it’s really accessible so even inexperienced gamers like me will enjoy it 😁
